UK’s Ofcom follows FCC, agrees to sell-off public radio spectrum
Posted Feb 1st 2008 5:26PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Wireless UK regulator Ofcom has already given some indication that it intended to follow the FCC and sell off some public radio spectrum of its own, and it now looks like its really about to get the ball rolling, with it giving the official go-ahead for some key spectrum to be sold off through a “market mechanism.” As The Independent reports, that spectrum could wind up netting as much as £20 billion (or just under $40 billion) when all is said and done, with the Ministry of Defence (which holds about 75% of it) likely to be the biggest beneficiary. Jeff Bezos says Kindle is “outpacing our expectations”
Posted Feb 1st 2008 11:59AM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Handhelds While we’re guessing you haven’t seen too many of ‘em pop up at your local coffee shop, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos nonetheless seems to be quite please with the performance of the company’s prized Kindle e-book reader, with him recently saying that “the Kindle, in terms of demand, is outpacing our expectations.” That demand has also apparently caused Amazon to “scramble” on the manufacturing side, resulting in a notice on the Kindle order page that the device temporarily sold out due to “heavy customer demand” (again). Of course, expectations and hard sales numbers are entirely different beasts, and you can probably draw your own conclusions given that Amazon is focusing considerably more on the former than the latter. Moldable Mouse Can Form Any Shape
Gadget Lab editor Rob Beschizza’s dreams of a penis-shaped mouse might finally have come true. Lite-On Technology’s Moldable Mouse can be squeezed into any shape, including that of a male member. It’s made of “non-toxic lightweight modelling clay, covered with nylon and polyurethane blend fabric”, and can be shaped, Play-Doh style, to fit any hand. Once molded, it keeps its shape until you’re ready to play again. The Moldable Mouse is still in the concept stage, but it has already won a Red Dot design award. PlayStation Eye hacked for desktop VR use
Posted Feb 1st 2008 1:21PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Gaming, Peripherals The Wiimote may be spurring on the majority of desktop VR hackery these days, but at least one enterprising developer seems to be aiming to change that, and he’s now showing that you can do more or less the same thing with a PlayStation Eye. As with the Wiimote, you need a pair of homemade IR-equipped glasses, but you’ll also need to perform a couple of minor modifications to the PS Eye itself. That all-important detail consists simply of a homemade lens cap that houses some exposed and developed film, which lets the camera receive only the infrared signals from the glasses. Mouse With Remote Control Capability

Mouse With Remote Control Capability
Guess the average two-button mouse is no longer just meant for clicking your way through World of Warcraft. GeekAlerts has covered a wireless mouse that actually comes with a built-in remote control. I would suggest having stuff like these being banned from conventions as someone could seriously mess up a major presentation with the support team running helter-skelter, wondering what went wrong without noticing a person in the crowd chuckling away. HP begins recycling plastic in ink cartridges
HP created a new process that makes the manufacturing of inkjet cartridges a much greener process. The engineering breakthrough allows for plastics to be taken from a range of sources and different grades, including drinks bottles, CD cases, and used inkjet cartridges, and then reused in the manufacture of brand new cartridges. Although the announcement has only been made in the last few days, HP claims to have already manufactured over 200 million new cartridges using the recycled plastics. That equates to over 5 million pounds of plastic last year not going into landfill sites. HP has also set its target at 10 million pounds of plastic reuse in 2008. Review: Turok for Xbox 360

Review: Turok for Xbox 360
Turok is a current-gen re-imagination of an old N64 series, and if you’ve been tracking the development of this dino beast first person shooter as I have, then you may have watched some Turok behind-the-scenes clips. Well, today the embargo expires. Read on to find out whether the game lived up to my lofty expectations or if it was crushed under the weight of them, like a T-Rex trouncing a Turkey Vulture. Graphically, the game is built in the Unreal Engine, so you know it’s good. But let’s just say that the dinosaurs look even more realistic in this title than they did in “Jurassic Park.” People look very similar to Gears of War or Unreal Tournament III, which is not really any surprise considering they were all made in the same engine.
