BlackBerry 9000 to arrive in two versions

RIM’s upcoming 9000 mobile phone is quickly becoming one of the most highly anticipated handsets of the year. We already have the confirmed specs on this device and it looks quite exciting, almost like a cooler version of the Curve, but with WiFi and 3G connectivity, as well as an updated UI.
With the release of the 9000 BlackBerry we will have to be braced not only for tough competition from the iPhone with its upcoming SDK, but also the iphone 2.0, which will have 3G connectivity, and even Google’s Android platform. And this is after blackberry figures out how to deal with two problematic issues that come with using that 3G connection–limited battery life and a high price.
It looks like RIM has devised one solution, or at least a work-around, to the problem. According to Boy Genius Report the “Niagara” will be BlackBerry’s 9000 handset without 3G. This is RIM’s way of keeping the price affordable and the battery life long while getting people to upgrade to new hardware and their slick new UI. There are some aesthetic changes to the phone as well, but it seems like the Niagara will mainly appeal to consumers who live in areas without 3G coverage.
