Eye-Fi Adds Geotagging And Hotspot Support

Written by admin on Monday, May 12th, 2008 in gadgets.

Eye-Fi just announced an update to its line of WiFi enabled SD cards and made them a whole lot more useful. The original $100 card has been rebadged “Eye-Fi Share” and has been joined by the “Eye-Fi Home”, an $80 card which functions as a cable replacement: no uploading to Flickr or anywhere else, just wireless transfer to your computer, and the quite exciting $130 “Eye-Fi Explore”, which will geotag and upload your photos out in the field. All models are till 2GB in size.

One of the problems our Danny Dumas noted with the original card is that it will only work with pre-configured WiFi access points. You needed to set the card up by connecting it to a computer.

MPAA goes after TorrentSpy, comes back with 110 million big ones
Torrenting is used by many, and I’m sure everyone who torrents has used or at least heard of, TorrentSpy. The website has been closed down since March 24, 2008, and after the latest news its safe to say that it will remain down. Basically, their reason for shutting down is that they had lost too much money from court cases, and according to the statement on their site the “legal climate in the USA for copyright, privacy of search requests, and links to torrent files in search results is simply too hostile.” Now in the latest blow, the MPAA has come out victorious after going at TorrentSpy and not only did they win the court case, but also $110 million. Looks like this will keep them down. (Read the full post about ‘MPAA goes after TorrentSpy, comes back with 110 million big ones’…)

Cell phone antenna on church rings up trouble

Written by admin on Monday, May 12th, 2008 in gadgets.

Wireless companies are always looking to take care of coverage dead zones in an attempt to keep and attract new subscribers but building new cell phone towers is not always an option due to the lack of available space or zoning. That’s why many companies have begun to lease roof space on buildings. One such plan seems to have the residents of one community up in arms. Of course, this is no regular residential or commercial building–it’s St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Rockville Centre, NY.

According to Fox News, some residents are against the building of a cell phone tower on church property, but the church’s pastor is all for it.

Swtched On: Green Plug tries to replace the worry warts (Part 1)
by Ross Rubin, posted May 10th 2008 at 7:04PMEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment. The best and most popular portable electronics products don’t work for long without them, but the general consumer sentiment toward AC adapters is evident in the terms of endearment such as “bricks” and “wall warts” given to them. They’re referred to with even more colorful language when they’re accidentally left behind on a trip or are otherwise unavailable when needed. But if a startup GreenPlug has its way, future portable electronics products may not come with an AC adapter, much like many printers today don’t come with a USB cable. Philips Xenium X800 e2e to come with “edge to edge” touchscreen?
As if we have not yet seen enough of all these new touchscreen phones that have been jumping out of the woodwork lately, here comes yet another, featuring the same old touchscreen, and almost the same specifications as well. Although this time, it could have one thing that separates it from the myriad of other touchscreen phones out there - herculean battery life. That’s because this new touchscreen phone falls under the Philips Xenium brand, which, in case you don’t know, has a reputation for churning out gadgets with incredibly long-lasting batteries. And knowing that this same company completed its very own touchscreen phone (Philips Xenium 9@9v) a couple of months back, this new rumor becomes quite believable. E-Ink e-Paper Display Technology

Written by admin on Monday, May 12th, 2008 in gadgets.

E-Ink has rolled out a new generation of e-paper cells, being up to 40% thinner and can be bent into other forms such as curves, allowing future devices to come in a wide range of form factors. Not only are they more flexible, they are also of a superior breed so to speak, being able to survive harsher temperatures thanks to its extremely power-efficient designs that make it able to stand more exposure outside. There are no future products to use such a display announced at press time, but E-Ink did mention that companies using their earlier e-paper display technology will be able to receive a custom display within three months’ time, which makes the earliest of such devices available this fall.

Second Gen iPhone: 3-G When You Want It, EDGE When You Don’t

Second Gen iPhone: 3-G When You Want It, EDGE When You Don’t
For those concerned about the battery taxing tendencies of 3-G chipsets, there’s new evidence that Apple may be planning to include a 3-G kill switch of sorts in its forthcoming second-gen iphone. The option, although hidden, was discovered to be a part of the latest firmware update for the regular EDGE-based iPhone and was found in the 2.0 beta5 Preferences binary. This, of course, implies that Apple will be using common firmware/software for both models of the iPhone, but the developer who made the discovery notes that the 3-G on/off option will only be available to those who purchase a 3-G iPhone. A screenshot of the new preference appeared Saturday on an independent Chronic Productions blog, which is also a part of iPhone hacking Chronic Dev web site.
