iPhone 3G hands-on

Written by admin on Monday, June 9th, 2008 in gadgets.

Sorry, we don’t have pictures but Apple took us into a dramatically lit back-room to check out the new iPhone 3G. Here’s what you need to know:

  • We did a quick data test — at our location we went from 104Kbps on the EDGE iPhone to 215Kbps on the 3G model. 2x ain’t bad, yo.
  • The enable/disable 3G setting is real, and buried a few menus deep. There is no automatic switching, Apple just assumes you’ll leave 3G on, and that the iphone has the juice to support that usage.
  • It’s tri-band 3G, as we reported the other day.

ODNA Urinal Concept

ODNA Urinal Concept
The ODNA urinal concept by Lee Isherwood is definitely something different - it helps promote water conservation by doubling up as a hand washing station. I know this will probably gross the majority out - I myself am pretty turned off by it, but it does do away with the need to flush as you wash your hands once you’ve zipped up, using that water to clean out the urinal. Hopefully the gush of water won’t be too strong as whatever splashes on you isn’t too pleasant - not to mention the number of folks who don’t wash their hands once they’re done. Good to hear it features an “anti-splashback” design. (Read the full post about ‘ODNA Urinal Concept’…)

Sega, Pangea, Digital Legends show off $9.99 iPhone games
by Nilay Patel, posted Jun 9th 2008 at 1:28PM We saw an early demo of Sega’s Super Monkey Ball back at the iPhone SDK event in March, but it looks like the real thing is ready for WWDC, with some 110 stages and all four classic monkeys, including Baby. We just caught a quick run-through during the keynote, but the graphics look unbelievable compared to anything we’ve seen on a cellphone before — easily DS-quality graphics. Also demoing games was Pangea, whose Brian Greenstone showed off Enigmo and Cro-Mag Rally, a racing game that uses the iphone itself as the steering wheel, via the accelerometer. If it’s true that the new iPhone is immediately available, I will have a hands-on review in minutes because I live steps from an Apple store.

Stay tuned….

Update: And iPhone 3G it is. That’s what it’s called. And it’s thinner and will be cheaper. Better battery life, and yes, yes, yes, real GPS!

JetBlue LiveTV purchasing Verizon’s Airfone network

Written by admin on Monday, June 9th, 2008 in gadgets.

In an attempt to bolster their in-flight entertainment offering, the JetBlue LiveTV division is finalizing plans to purchase Verizon’s Airfone network. JetBlue began testing their in-flight Wi-Fi service late last year, however it is nothing more than a glorified messaging service. The Wi-Fi service allows users to check email and also use instant messaging, in addition to watch television. JetBlue has been using the LiveTV service since 2002 and currently broadcasts DirecTV programming, no purchase price was announced for the sale. In a time when airlines are beginning to add extra charges for just about everything, its hard to understand just why they would spend additional money for new services.

Written by admin on Monday, June 9th, 2008 in gadgets.

Us geeks seem to be a magnet for accumulating electronic crap. As we keep buying more and more gadgetry, our stockpile of unused electronic equipment becomes higher and higher. And of course, we can’t just throw out the excess. It would be way too much of a waste.

The good news is that if you have a bit of an arts and crafts edge to your geekiness. there are some pretty cool ways to use the old electronic equipment to create new pieces of recycled art. These awesome animal sculptures are all the proof we need to excuse our pack-rat ways.

Designer Anna Smith has mastered the art of taking broken and left-over electronic equipment and creating something beautiful and innovative.

Claiming that Starbucks has breached its contract regarding interim Wireless coverage until AT&T’s service is fully implemented, T-Mobile is filing suit against both Starbucks and AT&T. The legal action is due to Starbuck’s current practice of offering the T-Mobile service, which can cost up to $10 a day and $20 a month, for free while the AT&T wireless service is implemented to over 7,000 Starbucks locations across the USA.

T-Mobile’s position is that the interim agreement granted them exclusive rights to wireless service in all Starbucks locations until the AT&T transition was complete.
