FreeCharge Weza Cranks Up the Portable Green Power Up To 11

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

The FreeCharge Weza does not have an OLED screen, or a 3G network and it has a zero megapixel count.  But it can manually recharge all the gadgets that do have those features, earning it a little green cred as one of the most interesting under-the-radar gadgets out there. It might even have enough juice to help out a few communities in need in Africa.

The Weza is a portable power charger that outputs 12V DC (through a ‘cigarette lighter’ plug), and generates power by stepping down on its treadle repeatedly.

Looks like Koreans have come up with their very own kiddy notebook - the Lukid from Daewoo Lucoms. This mobile computer is meant for low-cost educational use, based on the Intel Classmate PC. It will feature the following specifications :-

  • Intel Celeron 900MHz processor
  • 9″ LCD display
  • 512MB RAM
  • 30GB hard drive

This Windows XP-powered notebook will retail for approximately $500. Hmm, no optical drive? Well, at least you can carry it around like a briefcase thanks to the built-in handles on the chassis.

T-Mobile offers two new HotSpot@Home phones

T-Mobile offers two new HotSpot@Home phones
T-Mobile offers a service called HotSpot@Home, which allows T-Mobile subscribers with compatible phones the ability to make unlimited, nationwide calls over an accessible Wi-Fi connection. What makes the availability of this service even better is the fact that two new phones, also compatible with the HotSpot@Home service, are now being offered. These include the Nokia 6301 and the Samsung t339. The Nokia 6301 is said to “provide the style of a home phone with the look of a mobile“. Helping to give the phone its “home phone” look is a stand-up charger it can be docked in. The 6301 also includes a 2-megapixel camera with video capture, stereo Bluetooth and a music player. Motorola and Kodak team up for MOTOZINE ZN5

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

Motorola and Kodak have joined forces to produce a new phone with an emphasis on quality when it comes to taking photographs; alongside the usual array of mobile phone features.

The new phone is called the MOTOZINE ZN5 and combines Motorola’s ModeShift Technology (allowing the phone to become several different devices with a single button press) with Kodak’s knowledge of imaging through its digital camera pedigree.

The Kodak features include Perfect Touch technology, which reviews the pictures you have taken and improves them by removing dark shadows, making color more vibrant and adding detail.

JVC Launches Double Dock for IPod and IPhone

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

My oh my. What terrible problems us First Worlders have, trying to find dock space for all our iPods. JVC leaps to the rescue with its NX-PN7, a double-entry dock which will take an iPod in two holes at once and play back audio from either one. JVC have also added a radio, a remote control and a clock to the mix in an effort to justify the $150 price. One nice touch is the video-out socket, meaning you don’t have to spring for Apple’s $50 kit.

I’ve never been a fan of these all-in-one iPod boom-boxes. It seems like you’re paying extra just for the “Made for ipod” stickers on the box. Better to buy an Apple Universal Dock and jack it into a real stereo.

Power Assisted Suitcase Features Anti-Gravity

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

I don’t know if it’s the Fatboy Slim supplied music on the product site, or the hyperbolic marketing blurb (”How is it we put a man on the Moon 40 years before the idea of power assisted luggage?” - Neil Armstrong MD), but the the new Live Luggage power-assisted suitcases have got me absurdly excited.

The list of specifications makes us think that the suitcase is the product of some crazed British eccentric (the company is based in the UK). First, and possibly best, is the Anti-Gravity Handle, which isn’t actually some new non-Newtonian device but a handle which simply swings out as well as up, leaving the majority of the weight on the wheels. Then, there is a built in mini-umbrella.

Logitech Launches Mac-Only Hi-Def Webcam

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

It initially seems odd that Logitech would launch a Mac-only webcam: All Macs but the Mini and Pro have a built in iSight camera. Reading the specs gives the answer — the QuickCam Vision Pro is a significant step up in performance from the built-in option.

The two megapixel Quickcam can supply 720p video via an autofocus Carl Zeiss lens, and has a built in microphone which is hopefully better than the one in my MacBook. The camera will cost $130, and – floating eerily as it does in the product shot – the Quickcam reminds us of nothing other than the Empire’s Imperial Probe Droid, or Probot.

Four Crazy Concept Bikes

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

There’s something about the bike, along with the chair, that draws designers. Despite being an almost perfect design already, the reworkings of the humble bicycle seem almost endless. Some are genuine improvements, such as the change from pedals fixed to the front wheel (Penny Farthing) to a rod or chain driving the rear wheel, and others are less so (low-riders, anyone?)

You wouldn’t think that much more could be done to the basic diamond-framed, two-wheeled approach, but those designers can’ stop fiddling. Here are some of the fruits of their labors.

Cardboard Bike

The idea behind design student Phil Bridge’s concept is that it is theft-proof: Nobody would steal a cardboard bike.

Over one billion computers in use worldwide

Written by admin on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 in gadgets.

How many computers do you use on a regular basis? Maybe you’re a super geek with three or four, or perhaps you’re a bit more conservative with your one laptop. Either way, you’re contributing to a pretty huge number as we have just surpassed the one billion mark. That’s how many computers are now being used around the world, according to the Gartner group.

Their study shows the first 58% of these computers came in the form of enterprise machines, including the millions found in offices around the world.
