The computer mouse to be obsolete in 3-5 years?

Written by admin on Friday, July 18th, 2008 in gadgets.

Could it be? The way of the computer mouse will soon become obsolete? That is what an IT analyst is predicting.

According to Steve Prentice, research analyst over at Gartner, an IT analytical and consulting firm, in 3-5 years the mouse will be replaced by other human interface devices. Prentice said:

The mouse works fine in the desktop environment but for home entertainment or working on a notebook it’s over.

The reason for the prediction as Prentice sees it is the development of touch screens, gaming controllers like those made for Guitar Hero, Panasonic technology that detects hand movements instead of using a remote, and facial recognition technology that allows interaction through expressions.

Not everyone, however, is ready to ditch the mouse which has been around for almost 40 years.

Lego cutlery for some mealtime fun
Lap it up Lego fans, now you can get yourself some Lego-like cutlery if the Snack and Stack utensils from Fred and Friends start selling on the market. Each set of three (fork, spoon and knife) utensils has handles made of silicone that lock into each other just like Lego blocks. And apparently that’s not just for fun, but for utility as well. You can stack up the threesome easily enough for storage, or discover further uses with your imagination. Methinks they have the potential to liven up a dull kitchen or even inspire a fussy child to have a hearty meal. Via Slippery Brick. (Read the full post about ‘Lego cutlery for some mealtime fun’…)

Nokia N810 Price Drops to $299
CompUSA has made the Nokia N810 all the more affordable by dropping its price to $299. That’s not too shabby a figure to exchange for a 800 x 480 resolution display with a web browser, Flash support, Skype capability, e-mail and chat compatibility, multimedia playback and a GPS navigation system. Hopefully this discount won’t be limited to just the US but other parts of the world as well. After all, it’d be pretty cool to get one of these now and try to run Windows 3.1 on it. BlackBerry Bold heading to T-Mobile, in Germany
So sad for those hoping that the blackberry Bold would be landing shortly at T-Mobile here in the US, but instead pricing information has been announced for T-Mobile Germany. The price is set at €219.95 (about $350 US), which is a bit higher than the $299 that has already been announced for Rogers, which will begin offering their version next Friday on July 25. T-Mobile Germany currently has the available date simply listed as July, with the option to reserve now, but it is rumored to be coming on July 21, which is this Monday. Coming back to the US release, at this time we have only seen a confirmation come from AT&T, but they are still having trouble setting an official availability date. iPhone 3G in short supply-could last a month
According to Gene Munster from Pipe Jaffray, the iphone 3G is estimated to be in short supply until mid-August. Munster said that he’ll wager “we’ll see problems for another two to four weeks,” adding, “early demand has been more than [Apple] expected and checking with Apple’s own supply tool, it can be seen that Apple is quickly running out of units to put on their shelves with the hardest model to find being the black 16GB version. Wii Outsells Xbox 360 in US

Wii Outsells Xbox 360 in US
The Microsoft Xbox 360 has just lost its overall best-selling console position in the US to the Nintendo Wii, with 10.9 Wiis shifting since it was introduced in November a couple of years ago. This is pretty amazing, and it doesn’t look as though the Wii juggernaut will be slowing down anytime soon. Sony takes second place this time round, mainly due to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 that saw it shift 405,500 PS3s compared to the Xbox 360 which sold for slightly more than half the PS3’s total this June. Great to see a more balanced spread of hardware this time round, meaning that all of them can co-exist peacefully with one another, offering quality entertainment no matter the platform. AMD says it’ll detail its Atom-challenging plans in November
by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 18th 2008 at 2:35PMAMD has been hinting at its plans to take on Intel’s processor du jour, the Atom, for some time now, but brand new CEO Dirk Meyer is now getting slightly more official about it than the company has been previously, and he’s promising that AMD will reveal all come November. As the folks at Register Hardware point out, all indications point to that Atom-challenging processor being the “Bobcat,” which has been talked about for nearly a full year now. If that past information is correct, it looks like we can expect the chip to debut with a 1GHz clock speed, along with 128KB of L1 cache, 256KB of L2 cache an 800MHz HyperTransport link, support for 400MHz DDR 2 RAM, and a power consumption 8W.
