AMD’s quad-core Opterons power blade server designed to cut Intel

Written by admin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Hewlett-Packard has chosen AMD’s quad-core processors to power their most recent virtualization server, the ProLiant BL495c. It is a blade server geared toward offering more virtual machines per physical machine. HP has chosen AMD’s processors due to their extensive support for virtualization in hardware as well as their Direct Connect on-chip data transport system.

Virtualization is an extremely powerful tool that I truly believe one day will be in every device. After all, the idea of using the machine directly to compute something is nice, but the realization is there must always be some layer of executive riding atop the machine (such as an OS).

Does LG’s Blu-ray/Netflix Streamer Combo Pose Resolution Confusion?

Does LG’s Blu-ray/Netflix Streamer Combo Pose Resolution Confusion?
Denver, CO- In a press conference that officially launched the Netflix-streaming LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc player, representatives from both companies acknowledged the potential confusion present in a box that hosts two types of content, HD and non-HD. Mainly, the fact that every movie and show that streams from Netflix will not be in HD and won’t be upconverted may prove disappointing for people, even if there’s great innovation and novelty in making all of the Netflix movies available. According to one of the LG engineers present, the box should stream movies at ‘near DVD-quality.’ "Yes, it’s a misconception," Allan Jason, VP of marketing at LG admitted of the resolution disparity, which could be easily observed in a large HDTV. VIA sales down significantly, 43% from last August, 47% this year

Written by admin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

While their monthly sales were up nearly 20% over July, VIA is nowhere near where they were this time last year. With monthly revenue down 43% compared to this time last year, and annual revenue down 47% from January-August last year, VIA is hurting. I recently spoke with someone who works for Centaur, a company that does a significant portion of VIA’s R&D, testing and validation. The prognosis is uncertain at this time.

In related news, it seems the overall semiconductor industry was not down as much as was expected, fueled largely by cell phones and various consumer computer products (like TomTom, MP3 players and the like).

TouchFLO 3D UI On iPhone

TouchFLO 3D UI On iPhone
Purists will probably call this a travesty, but the TouchFLO 3D user interface found on the HTC Touch Diamond is pretty bangin’, and this time the tables have been turned - this Windows Mobile user interface is now available on the iphone, instead of having countless iPhone-lookalike interfaces on Windows-based devices. You will, of course, need a jailbroken device followed by a quick search for the iPhoneFLO in Installer.app before you’re good to go. Any takers? Google owns everything created using Chrome

Written by admin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Google’s web browser made quite a splash yesterday, didn’t it? Everybody was quick to download Chrome and realize its blazing fast speeds and neat new Omnibar. Apparently, though, nobody checked the License Agreement very carefully while they were using the world’s coolest new browser. Somebody over at Tap the Hive, though, took the time out to go over Chrome’s EULA with a fine-tooth comb and he found out some pretty interesting facts. Namely, that Google owns anything that you create using their browser. That really means anything from large, paid-for blog posts to your lowly Livejournal user.

Review: MOTO U9

Written by admin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Review: MOTO U9
Motorola used to be known for innovation and some of my favorite phones are still made by the company (the Motorola Q9h for example). Unfortunately, the company hasn’t produced anything in a while that has made me take notice, which is why I was interested in giving the music-focused MOTO U9 some play time. As I mentioned above, the U9 is focused on music playback and as a result features an OLED external display that offers the ability to control the music player. The U9 also includes a microSD slot, 25MB of on-board memory, and a USB cable so that you can side-load your music to the phone itself (it’s recognized in Windows Media Player) or a microSD card. Sony Ericsson releases SDK for Xperia X1 Panel Interface, panel download service in the works (updated: video)
by Thomas Ricker, posted Sep 3rd 2008 at 4:25AM var We know what you’re thinking — it’s Windows Mobile 6.1 fool, we’ve got the developers kit already. True, but not the SDK that allows developers to create custom, interactive panels for the touchscreen QWERTY’s Panel Interface. Sony Ericsson claims that, “The Xperia X1 will offer the richest mobile user experience, putting the world at the fingertips of the user.” In other words, the expectations have been set, developers, so you’d best get to to downloading the free SDK — you’ve got your work cut out for you. AMD may resurrect FX brand

Written by admin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

According to an article on X-bit Labs, AMD may be dipping back into its previously very successful money-making honey jar to ressurect the FX brand name for high-end consumer desktop processors. The newly revived line could come as early as mid-2009, if rumors are to be believed.

X-bit Labs’ Anton Shilov states that if the upcoming Deneb FX processors, a codename for the believed part, are real, then AMD would have to make something very attractive to warrant a high price tag. Early 45nm products from AMD have seen 2.8 and 3.0 GHz clock speeds. Shilov must believe the FX parts will exceed that rather handidly at, perhaps 3.4 GHz or more?

AMD began selling Athlon FX brands in 2003.

ASUS’ N10 netbook spotted in the wild, Eee posse nowhere to be found

ASUS’ N10 netbook spotted in the wild, Eee posse nowhere to be found
by Darren Murph, posted Sep 3rd 2008 at 7:50AM You know, we’re really (really) proud of ASUS for letting the N10 strut its stuff in the wild without the crutch that is the completely oversaturated Eee brand. And look, the 10.2-inch netbook looks mighty fine, now doesn’t it? Sure, it’s not relying on hordes of siblings for moral support, but with that LED-backlit display, GeForce 9300GS and Intel N270 processor, who needs meaningless pats on the fanny?
