Drafts and cold spots around windows and doors aren’t just uncomfortable—they can also drive up your heating and cooling bills. Poor insulation allows warm air to escape in winter and cool air to leak out in summer, making your HVAC system work harder. The good news is that with a few simple upgrades, you can significantly improve your home’s energy efficiency and comfort. Here’s a practical guide to getting started.

Identify Where Air Leaks Occur

Before you begin sealing or insulating, it’s important to locate the main sources of air leaks. On a windy day, you can often feel drafts with your hand around window frames and door edges. Another trick is to hold a lit incense stick or a thin piece of tissue near the suspected area—if the smoke or paper moves, air is leaking through.

Pay special attention to:

  • The joints between the frame and the wall
  • Worn or missing weatherstripping
  • Older single-pane windows
  • Door thresholds and mail slots

Once you know where the leaks are, you can focus your efforts where they’ll have the biggest impact.

Replace Old Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to improve insulation. Over time, it can become brittle, cracked, or flattened, losing its ability to seal properly.

  • Choose the right type: Foam, rubber, and silicone weatherstripping come in various sizes and profiles. Measure the gap between the frame and sash or door to find the best fit.
  • Clean the surface: Remove old adhesive and dirt before applying new material.
  • Install carefully: Start at one corner and press the strip firmly into place. Avoid stretching it, as it may shrink later.

You’ll likely notice an immediate improvement in comfort and energy efficiency once new weatherstripping is installed.

Insulate Around the Frame

Even if your windows and doors are well-sealed, gaps between the frame and wall can still let air in. Use expanding spray foam or insulation tape to fill these spaces. Afterward, cover the area with caulk or trim to protect the insulation from moisture and wear.

If you live in an older home, it may be worth having a professional check for larger structural gaps or outdated materials that need replacement.

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Windows or Storm Windows

If your home still has single-pane windows, it’s difficult to achieve good insulation no matter how much sealing you do. Consider:

  • Replacing with double- or triple-pane energy-efficient windows that have low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings and gas fills for better insulation.
  • Adding storm windows if you want to keep your existing frames. They create an extra layer of air that acts as insulation.

While these upgrades require a larger investment, they can pay off over time through lower energy bills and improved comfort.

Check and Seal Doors

Doors are often overlooked sources of energy loss. A door that doesn’t close tightly can let in cold air along the edges or underneath.

  • Install a door sweep or draft stopper to block air from entering under the door.
  • Replace worn weatherstripping around the sides and top.
  • Adjust hinges and latches so the door fits snugly in its frame.

If your door is old, warped, or poorly insulated, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR–rated model can make a noticeable difference.

Use Curtains and Other Barriers Strategically

While curtains don’t insulate on their own, they can help retain heat. Heavy or thermal curtains reduce heat loss through windows, especially at night. During the day, open them to let in sunlight and take advantage of natural warmth.

In summer, closing curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day can also help keep your home cooler.

Maintain and Inspect Regularly

Even the best insulation needs upkeep. Check weatherstripping, caulking, and seals at least once a year—ideally before heating or cooling season begins. Replace any worn materials and watch for signs of moisture or mold, which can indicate leaks.

Regular maintenance prevents small issues from becoming costly repairs and keeps your home energy-efficient year-round.

A Smart Investment in Comfort and Savings

Improving insulation around windows and doors is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy waste. It doesn’t always require major renovations—small, targeted improvements can make a big difference. The result is a home that feels more comfortable, costs less to heat and cool, and contributes to a more sustainable future.
