Feeling safe at home isn’t just about living in a quiet neighborhood or knowing your neighbors—it’s also about making sure your home’s physical security is solid. Many break-ins happen through doors and windows with worn-out locks, loose hinges, or outdated hardware. The good news is that a few simple steps can make your home much harder to break into. Here’s a practical guide to checking and maintaining your locks and hinges to help keep your home secure.

Start with a Thorough Security Check

Begin by inspecting every door and window in your home. Look for signs of wear, rust, or loose parts. A lock that sticks or a hinge that sags can be a weak point that burglars might exploit.

Make a list of areas that need attention—front and back doors, patio doors, basement entries, and windows that aren’t used often. Don’t forget sheds, garages, and side entrances; these are common targets because they’re often less secure.

Check Your Locks—and Consider an Upgrade

Your locks are the heart of your home’s security. Many older homes still have locks that don’t meet modern safety standards. Check whether your locks are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or Grade 2 certified—these ratings indicate strong, tested hardware. If your locks are outdated or showing signs of wear, it may be time to replace them.

Consider adding:

  • Two independent locks on your main entry door, such as a deadbolt and a latch lock.
  • High-security deadbolts with drill-resistant cylinders and reinforced strike plates.
  • Smart locks that use key codes, fingerprint access, or smartphone control for added convenience and security.

If you live in an apartment or condo, make sure the building’s main entrance and mailboxes also have secure locks. A weak common door can compromise everyone’s safety.

Hinges and Hardware—The Overlooked Weak Spots

Even the best lock won’t help much if your hinges are weak. Some burglars simply remove or lift a door off its hinges. Make sure your exterior doors have security hinge pins or non-removable hinge screws that prevent this.

Check window hinges and latches as well. If they’re rusty or loose, replace them. You can also install window locks or security bars that make it difficult to open a window from the outside—even if the glass is broken.

Maintenance Makes a Difference

Regular maintenance extends the life of your locks and hinges. Lubricate lock cylinders with graphite powder or a lock-specific lubricant once or twice a year—avoid regular oil, which can attract dust and grime. Use a light, non-corrosive oil on hinges to prevent squeaking and rust.

Also, make sure doors close properly and that the deadbolt fully extends into the strike plate. A misaligned door can prevent the lock from engaging securely.

Add Simple Security Enhancements

Once your locks and hinges are in good shape, consider a few extra measures to boost your home’s protection:

  • Motion-sensor outdoor lighting to deter intruders.
  • Timers or smart plugs for indoor lights to make your home look occupied when you’re away.
  • Door viewers or security chains for safe interaction with visitors.
  • Alarm systems or security cameras, which can be effective deterrents and provide valuable evidence if needed.

Many of these upgrades are affordable and easy to install yourself.

Get Professional Advice

If you’re unsure how secure your home really is, contact a licensed locksmith or home security specialist. They can inspect your property and recommend specific improvements. Some insurance companies even offer free or discounted home security assessments.

A professional inspection can reveal vulnerabilities you might not notice—and it’s a small investment compared to the cost and stress of a break-in.

Peace of Mind Starts with Awareness

Home security isn’t just about technology—it’s also about habits. Lock your doors, even when you’re home. Close windows when you leave. Stay alert to unusual activity in your neighborhood. With a little attention and a few practical upgrades, you can make your home safer and enjoy greater peace of mind every day.
