As your cat grows older, its body and nutritional needs change—just like ours do. Senior cats may slow down, lose muscle tone, or develop health issues that affect digestion, joints, or teeth. Adjusting your cat’s diet can help support its health and comfort through the golden years. Here’s how to make sure your aging feline gets the nutrition it needs.

When Is a Cat Considered “Senior”?

Most cats are considered seniors around age seven or eight, though this can vary by breed, size, and overall health. Larger breeds like the Maine Coon may age a bit faster, while smaller cats often stay spry longer. Signs of aging can include sleeping more, moving less, or a coat that’s lost some of its shine.

It’s a good idea to schedule a wellness check with your veterinarian once your cat reaches this stage. Your vet can assess weight, dental health, and organ function—and help you choose the right diet for your cat’s age and condition.

Changes in Metabolism and Appetite

Older cats tend to have slower metabolisms and lower energy needs. They may require fewer calories but still need high-quality nutrients. At the same time, their sense of smell and taste can diminish, making them pickier eaters.

To help maintain your cat’s appetite:

  • Warm the food slightly to enhance aroma.
  • Choose highly palatable, soft-textured foods.
  • Offer smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day.

If your cat suddenly stops eating, contact your vet right away—it could be a sign of illness.

Choosing Food That Supports the Body

Senior cat foods are specially formulated to meet the needs of aging cats. They typically include:

  • Lower fat and higher fiber to help maintain a healthy weight.
  • Easily digestible proteins to preserve muscle without overworking the kidneys.
  • Added vitamins and antioxidants to support the immune system.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids to promote joint health and a shiny coat.

If your cat has specific health issues—such as kidney disease, dental problems, or obesity—your veterinarian can recommend a prescription or therapeutic diet tailored to those needs.

Keep an Eye on Weight

Weight management is one of the most important aspects of senior cat care. Extra pounds can worsen joint pain and increase the risk of diabetes, while weight loss may signal illness or poor nutrient absorption.

Weigh your cat regularly, and check that you can feel the ribs without them protruding. Small adjustments in portion size can make a big difference. Your vet can help you determine the right feeding plan and calorie intake.

Don’t Forget About Hydration

Older cats often have a reduced sense of thirst, which can lead to dehydration and strain the kidneys. Always provide fresh, clean water, and consider adding wet food to your cat’s diet to increase fluid intake.

Some cats prefer moving water, so a pet fountain can encourage them to drink more.

Make Mealtime Comfortable

Routine and comfort matter to senior cats. Feed your cat in a quiet, familiar spot and at consistent times each day. If you have multiple pets, make sure your older cat can eat without competition or stress.

If your cat has arthritis or mobility issues, try raising the food and water bowls slightly to reduce strain on the neck and joints.

When Appetite Declines

A drop in appetite can be caused by dental pain, discomfort, or illness. Check your cat’s mouth for signs of gum disease or bad breath, and have your vet examine it if you notice changes. Sometimes, a dental cleaning or switching to softer food can make eating easier and more enjoyable.

A Loving Approach to the Senior Years

Caring for an older cat isn’t just about nutrition—it’s about compassion and attention. Provide a calm environment, gentle affection, and regular vet visits. While you can’t stop the aging process, the right diet and care can help your cat stay healthy, comfortable, and happy for many years to come.
